A useful objective is to keep the movement flowing forward rather than bouncing vertically. Excessive up-and-down movement wastes energy because the swimmer is spending effort lifting the body instead of travelling down the pool.

Swimmers developing the body dolphin should pay attention to three things:

  • Keep the neck relaxed and aligned with the body.
  • Allow the hips to respond naturally to the chest movement.
  • Finish the wave through the legs without turning the kick into a bicycle-like knee action.

The first kick supports the entry and forward extension of the arms. The second kick works with the finishing phase of the pull and helps the body maintain momentum into the arm recovery.

Swimmers who lose this rhythm often show one of two patterns. Some perform both kicks too close together, leaving a dead section in the stroke. Others produce one very large kick and one weak or almost absent kick.

Rather than thinking β€œkick twice,” think about connecting each kick to a specific phase of the arm action. This makes the rhythm easier to repeat and helps prevent the legs from operating independently from the rest of the stroke.

Build an Effective Butterfly Pull

After the hands enter the water, the swimmer needs to establish a useful position before applying force. Rushing immediately into a hard pull can cause the hands and elbows to slip through the water without creating effective propulsion.

The pull should help move the body forward while preparing the arms to exit cleanly for recovery. The hands travel through the underwater phase and accelerate as the stroke progresses, finishing near the hips before the arms leave the water.

Three problems frequently make the pull inefficient:

Pulling Too Wide

An excessively wide pull can make it difficult to maintain pressure on the water and may disrupt the connection between the arms and body rhythm.

Dropping the Elbows

When the elbows collapse during the underwater phase, the swimmer may lose a strong position for directing force backward.

Finishing Too Early

If the hands exit before the pull is properly completed, the swimmer loses momentum just before the recovery begins. This often leads to a recovery that feels forced.

The objective is not to make the pull as powerful as possible. It is to create enough effective propulsion while preserving the timing needed for the next phase.

Keep the Arm Recovery Relaxed

Many swimmers associate butterfly with a dramatic, muscular arm recovery. In practice, excessive tension makes repeated cycles harder.

Once the underwater pull finishes, the arms should recover over the water with enough relaxation to return to the front without unnecessary effort. The shoulders need suitable mobility, but the swimmer should not try to lift the entire upper body simply to clear the arms.

A recovery that repeatedly catches the water or feels extremely difficult can be a symptom of an earlier timing problem. The cause may be a weak finish to the pull, poor second-kick timing, excessive vertical movement or a breath that keeps the head raised too long.

Fix Butterfly Breathing Without Breaking the Stroke

Breathing is one of the most common points where butterfly rhythm breaks down.

The swimmer needs to raise the mouth sufficiently to inhale, but lifting the head and chest too high increases resistance and can drive the hips downward. Once the hips drop, the next cycle requires more effort to restore body position.

A more efficient breath stays connected to the pull. As the upper body rises naturally during the stroke, the swimmer takes the breath and then returns the head toward a neutral position as the arms recover forward.

The head should not remain lifted while the hands are entering for the next cycle.

For swimmers who repeatedly lose rhythm when breathing, it can be useful to compare non-breathing cycles with breathing cycles. If the non-breathing butterfly is noticeably smoother, the breathing action is probably changing body position or timing.

Why Butterfly Often Feels Exhausting After 25 Metres

A swimmer may have enough fitness to complete longer distances in freestyle or breaststroke yet struggle to maintain butterfly. This does not automatically mean poor conditioning.

Single-arm butterfly can reduce coordination demands while allowing the swimmer to work on timing, breathing and the underwater pull. Short full-stroke repetitions can help transfer improvements back into complete butterfly without allowing fatigue to destroy the movement pattern.

The key is progression. A swimmer should be able to explain what the drill is correcting and then reproduce that improvement when returning to the complete stroke.

If the same fault immediately returns during full butterfly, the drill has not yet transferred into the stroke.

When Does Butterfly Need Stroke Correction?

A swimmer does not need to wait until the stroke completely breaks down before seeking technical help. Butterfly is a good candidate for targeted correction because relatively small timing changes can affect several other parts of the stroke.

Consider a focused assessment if you can complete butterfly but consistently experience problems such as:

  • Arms failing to clear the water comfortably.
  • Hips dropping during every breath.
  • Dolphin kick coming mainly from the knees.
  • Losing rhythm after a few cycles.
  • One kick disappearing from the stroke.
  • Large differences between breathing and non-breathing cycles.
  • Needing much more effort without gaining speed.

Fifth, integrate breathing without changing the established rhythm. Only after these elements are reasonably stable should the swimmer focus heavily on increasing distance or speed.

This order is not a rigid rule for every swimmer. A coach may identify a different primary fault during assessment. The principle is to fix the movement that is creating the largest downstream problem instead of treating every visible symptom separately.
